HONOLULU (October 13, 2021) – Iolani Palace has unveiled its 2021 Palace Ornament, inspired by the Coat of Arms gifted to King Kalakaua for his coronation. The regal, limited-edition piece is now available for pre-order online at the Iolani Palace website.
This year’s ornament takes inspiration from the stylized Coat of Arms that hangs from the puloulou, or royal kapu staff, on display in the Throne Room of Iolani Palace. Both items were gifts to King Kalakaua for his coronation on February 12, 1883. The ornament features puloulou, colors of the Hawaiian Kingdom flag, and the national motto adorning a golden ribbon. In the center is ke kukuioiwikauikaua, the torch that burns at mid-day. Additionally, the back of the ornament includes a Hawaiian inscription that documents the presentation and origin of the puloulou. The piece serves as a beautiful reminder of the reign of Kalakaua.
The 2021 Palace Ornament is available for pre-order through December 1, 2021, for $25 at the Iolani Palace Shop website; pre-orders will be mailed in early December. It will be available in the Palace Shop starting on December 10, 2021, for $30. For more information, call (808) 532-1050 or email shops@iolanipalace.org.
