Kalākaua’s subjects had limited options to communicate with him. Inter-island and international cables were planned during his reign, but did not get the necessary funding until the 20th century. Inter-island radio phone service began on November 2, 1931, and the first radio phone call to the continental United States was made from the Throne Room on December 23, 1931.
