King Kalākaua Birthday Celebration

Say Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Kalākaua during a special celebration honoring King Kalākaua’s birthday and legacy.

The community is invited to gather on the Palace grounds for a performance by the Royal Hawaiian Band and a review of the Royal Guard. Guests will also see ʻIolani Palace decorated as it was for the King’s 50th birthday. Kamaʻāina are invited to experience the Palace through a free self-led audio tour. This year’s event will also feature the United Japanese Society of Hawai’i performing traditional dances that highlight the Meiji era and the historical period surrounding the arrival of the Gannenmono, the first group of Japanese contract laborers who arrived in Hawaiʻi in 1868

A traveler, innovator and renaissance man, King Kalākaua shared Hawaiʻi with the world while encouraging a renewed sense of pride among his people. During his reign, ʻIolani Palace was built as a symbol of a modern and sovereign Hawaiian nation. His legacy continues to influence Hawaiʻi and the world today.
